3. The classification of my mammal: Animalia
Kingdom: Animalia
Phylum: Chordata

Order: Monotremata
Class: Mammalia
Family: Ornithorhynchidae
Genus: Ornithorhynchus
Species: Anatinus

4. What are some of the animal’s physical adaptations to its environment?

The Platypus has an average body temperature of about 32 °C (90 °F) rather than the 37 °C (99 °F) typical of placental mammals. This has been a gradual adaptation to harsh environmental conditions.

5. What are some of the organism’s behavioral adaptations to its environment?

One of the behavioural adaptations of a platypus is using its bill to obtain food. it scoops up worms, small shellfish and other food from the bottom of lakes & rivers.

6. What is the role of your organism in the food chain? Be specific about role as a producer, consumer or decomposer. If a consumer, then describe the food preferences, like herbivore, carnivore or omnivore.

Platypuses have many predators. Quote from the Related Link: "Platypus are eaten by a variety of predators including spotted-tailed quoll, dingo, feral cat, monitor lizards, water rat, pythons, crocodile, eels and possibly other large fish. There may also be avian predators such as owls or eagles. Platypus are also occasionally taken on worm-baited fishing lines and become entangled in discarded mesh and nylon."
7. Describe the biome where this organism lives.

Their habitat is in eastern Australia. They live in lakes, rivers and freshwater creeks in the deciduos forest. Their burrows are dug just on the rivers bank, just above the water.
8. Discuss the status of the species. Is it plentiful, threatened, endangered or extinct?

It is only one step away from endangered and you can thank the poachers for that one.

9. How do humans impact your organism? (Hot Tip: Think of the HIPPO dilemma – handout)
Poachers kill the platypus for its fur.
