Research Notes

1. The mammal I chose to study is: Black Rhinoceros

2. The common name of my mammal is: Black Rhino

3. The classification of my mammal:
Phylum: Chordata
Class: Mammalia
Order: Perissodactyla
Genus: Diceros
Species: Bicornis

4. What are some of the animal’s physical adaptations to its environment?

  • A thick, layered skin protects the rhino from thorns and sharp grasses.
  • The soles of their feet are thickly padded to cushion the legs and absorb shock.
  • The upper lip has been adapted for seizing and grasping (prehensile) objects which helps in browsing and foraging.

5. What are some of the organism’s behavioral adaptations to its environment?

  • a mother black rhino knows to stay with its young until it is ready to live on its own
  • a male knows to go find a mate when it can reproduce
  • all rhinos know to charge at anything that seems to be defying

6. What is the role of your organism in the food chain? Be specific about role as a producer, consumer or decomposer. If a consumer, then describe the food preferences, like herbivore, carnivore or omnivore.

The Black Rhinoceros is a herbivorous browser that eats leafy plants, branches, shoots, thorny wood bushes and fruit. Therefore they're consumers.

7. Describe the biome where this organism lives.
The black rhino lives in the grassland biome, and the shrub biome. The reason the black rhino likes this biome because all of their needs thrive in this biome. The grassland biome
is populated by grasses and other non woody plants. And the schrubland biome is fuilled with shrubs and other shrubbish plants.

8. Discuss the status of the species. Is it plentiful, threatened, endangered or extinct?
The black rhino is extremely endangered.

9. How do humans impact your organism? (Hot Tip: Think of the HIPPO dilemma – handout)
Humans are impacting my organism in a very negative way. We are killing them off for their resources such as their hide and their ivory. So in the hippo dilemma packet it is affected by over consumption.

10. Identify the place(s) on the map where your organism lives. Color in the map accordingly.
The black rhinos primarily live on the south east side of africa.

Black Rhinoceros range

11. Amazing facts:
Black rhinos have terrible eye sight and charge at pretty much everything.
Black rhinos
excretes their own weight in dung every 48 hours.
Black rhinos horns grow all of their lives.
The rhino can live four to five days in the absence of water.
