1. The mammal I chose to study is:

The Porcupine

Common Porcupine

3. The classification of my mammal:

Kingdom: AnamaliaPhylum: Chordata

Class: Mammalia

Order: Rodentia

Family: Erethizontidae

Genus: Erethizon

Species:Erethizon dorsatum

4. What are some of the animal’s physical adaptations to its environment?

The common Porcupine 's adaptations are growing needles on his or her's back to fend off predators. It has alos grown long claws to dig into the soil to make a burrow.

5. What are some of the organism’s behavioral adaptations to its environment?

The common porcupine is a good swimmer, you will e surprised how swimming can help the porcupine find food new homes and escaping predators its hollow quills help keep it afloat. It is also an excellent tree-climber and spends much of its time in trees. It can also make a home inside a rotting tree or just find a place, they are very smart.

6. What is the role of your organism in the food chain? Be specific about role as a producer, consumer or decomposer. If a consumer, then describe the food preferences, like herbivore, carnivore or omnivore.

The common porcupine is an herbivore. It eats leaves, twigs and green plants like skunk cabbage and clover. In the winter, it may eat bark. It often climbs trees to find food. It is mostly nocturnal, but will sometimes forage for food in the day. It is a consumer it eats like said they eat leaves, twigs and green plants such as skunk cabbage and clover.

7. Describe the biome where this organism lives.

The common porcupine lives in coniferous, deciduous the deciduous forest are forest that are temperate. Mixed forests the Mixed forest are in the deciduous forest an ecosystem in the forest. In the west, it can be found in scrubby areas. It can be found in the deciduous forests. Another relative can be found in Africa and the only difference is the size in the location.

8. Discuss the status of the species. Is it plentiful, threatened, endangered or extinct?

The common Porcupine is plentiful it has barely any t

hreats except for loss of habitat but so far it has been living fine. It has been losing it's habitat because of over grown human population. But since it is such a amazing animal it can just find another place to live.

9. How do humans impact your organism? (Hot Tip: Think of the HIPPO dilemma – handout)

The Common Porcupine is stable but they have been hunted for some food because they are a valuable food source. But over all there is nothing valuable in the porcupine. Its just that the Porcupines have actually been losing their homes because people will build homes on top of the Porcupines habitat.

10. Identify the place(s) on the map where your organism lives. Color in the map accordingly.

The Common Porcupine lives inside the Deciduous Forest that is its main habitats. It does have a relative inside Africa but it is not the Common Porcupine but it is very closely related. The difference is the size and the location.

11. Amazing facts: Everyone thinks that the "Common Porcupine" can shoot out it's spikes at the predators that are trying to attack it. Unfortunately the Common Porcupine can shoot out it's spikes it just looks like it because the spikes are actually quite long so they can hit the attacker's from long range. The Common Porcupine is also the largest rodent in North America. The Common Porcupine has about 30,000 quills on its back and the spikes are really just hairs that have barbs at the tips of it so when you get poked with one it will hard to get out.
