Mammal Diversity Project

Project Description

After you have picked a topic from the hat, you will research that particular species. To assist you with your research, you may use the websites on resources wiki page - use the navigation bar on the left to get there. Alternatively, you may want to use books we have brought in from the library or the specific folder of information we have organized for each topic. The goal of the project is to gather information on the creature and organize the data into a brochure. We will be working on this in class and you will also have homework related to it.

Research Guidelines

  1. Choose a mammal from the mystery bucket.

  2. Find two pictures of the organism that you are studying. Open a word document and paste the images into the document. Then copy and paste the URL for the each image you are using into the word document. This allows you to cite your source as you work.

  3. You will be taking notes electronically. You may use bullet points or fragmented sentences to answer the research questions. Be sure to address all of the following research questions:
What is the classification of the organism?
What are some of the animal’s physical adaptations to its environment?
What are some of the organism’s behavioral adaptations to its environment?
What is the role of your organism in the food chain? Be specific about role as a producer, consumer or decomposer. If a consumer, then describe the food preferences, like herbivore, carnivore or omnivore.
Describe the biome where this organism lives.
Discuss the status of the species. Is it plentiful, threatened, endangered or extinct?

  4. How do humans impact your organism? (Hot Tip: Think of the HIPPO dilemma - handout)
  5. Identify the place(s) on the map where your organism lives. Color in the map accordingly.
  6. Amazing facts

Be sure that the writing is clear, well organized, proof read for clarity, spelling and punctuation errors.

Mammal Wiki Page

  1. Review the comments posted to your electronic notes.
  2. Make appropriate revisions to your notes.
  3. Turn notes (bulleted points) into complete sentences
  4. Insert the two images from the word document previously created and saved in your briefcase.
  5. Add the colored map, which has been scanned and saved to the shared, upper school folder...
  6. Pick only one of the following items to include in your wiki page:
Write a song about your mammal
Write a legend about your creature
Write a poem about your creature
    Drawing (choose one)
    - The organism

    - The mammal's habitat
  7. Write a comic strip that discusses the challenges your species faces and ways in which children can help to protect that organism.
  8. Write a public service announcement or advertisement for the animal, which includes:
    A description of the challenges that the species is faced with;

    How to protect it; and

What you can do as a 6th grade student

Biome Wiki Page Development

  1. Working in small groups of students who have mammals that live in the same biome, you will make a biome specific Wiki page.
  2. Include a detailed description of the biome, including the following pieces of information:
    Temperature ranges
A description of a food chain
A fascinating fact about the biome
  3. Insert two images of the biome
  4. Go back to your mammal page and create links to the appropriate biome page
